Fireworks displays are one of my favorite things about summer and they're also one of my favorite things to photograph. Getting good shots is easy too and you can get interesting and creative photos with any type of digital (or film) camera. There are two basic techniques: use a tripod and cable release to keep the lens open for a long exposure or just set a high ISO (and sometimes that isn't even necessary) and shoot individual bursts.
I've just published an extensive fireworks photography tutorial on my website that covers both methods in much more detail. Be sure to check dates in your local papers for displays in surrounding towns which are often held on non-competing nights; that way you can photograph several displays. Also, if you want to get some photos published, offer your fireworks photos to the webmaster of your town's web page--they love getting photos of town events.
